New Braunfels throws new public transit system into overdrive

NEW BRAUNFELS – The city is taking steps toward implementing a new public transit system.

The city’s Transit Development Plan aims to deliver citywide transit coverage, focus service on key corridors and destinations, and develop a system that can be launched quickly and provide adequate capacity for future growth.

Short- and long-term plans include beginning a citywide “micro transit” service—similar to Uber Pool and other shared transit services—next year. They also include a request for proposals for a micro transit service operator.

The city plans to add two fixed-route services within New Braunfels in the next five years.

The city also plans to also establish an urban transit district, allowing it to receive public transportation money through the Texas Department of Transportation.

If the plan is approved this next year, the city is eligible to receive a little over $300,000 of state funds to go to transit that fiscal year.
